You know the old joke right. A Scotsman drops a penny and it hits him on the back of the head. We have all heard the stereotypes about the cheap Scotsman holding onto his wallet for dear life. Well I am here to tell you that the legendary Tartan Army just blew that stereotype right out of the water down in New England during this 2026 World Cup. Over 20,000 members of the Tartan Army descended on the Boston area.

The original plan was to stay near Gillette Stadium in Foxborough but when they got here they found out the hotel prices were absolute robbery. We are talking straight up extortion. So instead of getting gouged near the stadium a massive chunk of the fans decided to set up camp down the road in Providence Rhode Island.
And let me tell you Providence rolled out the red carpet. The locals, city officials, cops, firefighters, and the Providence Tartan Army all stepped up to help the visitors find affordable places to crash. They treated these fans like family from the second they arrived. It is estimated that the Scottish fans brought an injection of 35 million dollars to Providence.

Now here is where it gets legendary. A bunch of Scots go to town for a drink to celebrate their massive 1 to 0 win over Haiti on June 13. And man did they drink. They packed the local pubs wall to wall. Bartenders were pulling pints until their arms nearly fell off. The stories coming out of the bars were incredible. These fans practically drank the city dry. They drained kegs of lager, polished off the stout, and cleared out the top shelf. It was an absolute masterclass in celebration. They ran up tabs that would make your eyes water and brought an energy to the city that locals will be talking about for decades.
Let us look at the bar tab by the numbers.

The Dubliner went through 100 kegs of Guinness and 80 kegs of Tennent lager.
Sam Adams Taproom ran out of Boston Lager on Sunday night after selling over 3,000 pints. Staff at the Taproom collected 70 empty kegs on Monday morning.
Fans at the taproom consumed four times the amount of beer compared to a normal holiday weekend.
Hennessy's Bar reported that their business was three times higher than their usual St Patrick's Day sales.
G Bar in Providence saw 2,000 to 3,000 people on Saturday alone.
The manager at G Bar said sales over the weekend were three times as big as any Super Bowl.
But here is the twist. After drinking the town dry and having the absolute time of their lives, these so called cheap Scotsmen got ready to settle up. And what did they leave behind to say thank you to the city that treated them so well. The biggest tip you have ever seen.
Organizer David Hood stepped up and said the fans wanted to give right back to the community that took them in. These absolute legends scraped together around 30,000 dollars and they did not just hand it to a bartender. They handed 10,000 dollars to the cancer unit at Hasbro Children's Hospital to help kids getting treatment. Another 10,000 dollars went straight into a grassroots youth soccer program for underprivileged kids right there in Rhode Island. On top of that they gave 6,500 dollars to the Rhode Island Highlanders to set up bagpipe tuition in local schools, and supported Craig Ferguson who walked from Los Angeles to Boston to raise cash for Scottish mental health services.

The big check handover was June 18 2026 during the Tartan Army Downtown March and music festival down at 195 District Park.
What started out as a bunch of folks just looking for a cheap place to sleep turned into a story about real friendship and gratitude. The Tartan Army came to back their boys on the pitch, but they ended up proving exactly how you say thank you to a city that treats you right. They came, they drank the place dry, and they left a tip that will change lives. Cheers to the Tartan Army.
