Hey everybody, Ants here from Jive Talkin and Black Donnelly Media. Grab a coffee and take a seat because we need to have a serious talk about our beautiful city of Toronto. We all work hard for our pay. We punch the clock, pay our taxes, and expect the government to use that money for affordable housing to keep the roads paved, the garbage picked up, and the parks clean.

But lately it feels like the folks in charge are treating our hard earned tax dollars like a bottomless ATM. They pass these massive spending bills behind closed doors, or they bury the true costs until it is too late for us to say a word.
What are they doing with your money anyway?
You have to wonder what goes through their heads. We get hit with massive property tax hikes and cost of living increases, and yet they always seem to find cash for pet projects and corporate bailouts.Â
Here are five major things the government pushed through with your money while you were busy trying to make ends meet.
1. The FIFA World Cup Bait and Switch

We all love soccer, but this one is a tough pill to swallow. A few years ago they told us hosting the 2026 World Cup would be a great investment. Now the true costs have exploded. For Toronto alone, taxpayers are on the hook for a staggering $380 million. Across the country it is over a billion dollars, breaking down to about $82 million per game just for security and stadium upgrades. They quietly approved these ballooning budgets while promising us the moon, and now we are left holding the bag.
2. The Ghost Train Station

Imagine paying for a house that never gets built. Well, taxpayers were just handed a $97 million bill for a SmartTrack train station that does not even exist. The project was cancelled, but the contracts and the red tape still cost us nearly a hundred million dollars. That is money that could have housed people, fixed our crumbling infrastructure, or lowered our taxes. Instead it vanished into thin air, and they barely made a peep about it until the bill came due.
3. The Dundas Street and Sankofa Square Renaming

This one really got people fired up. City Council decided to rename Yonge Dundas Square to Sankofa Square and rebrand Dundas Street. The estimated price tag for this massive logistical nightmare is around $12.7 million. They pushed this through committee without any real public vote or deep consultation with the taxpayers who actually have to fund it. Small businesses have to change their addresses, the city has to change all the signs, and we foot the multi million dollar bill for an ideological project we never asked for.
4. The Water Taxi Bill

This one is slipping right under the radar. The city is studying a massive new SeaBus service across the Inner Harbour. They are looking at annual operating costs ranging from $645,000 to over $4.2 million depending on the route and vessel size. On top of that, the city is spending $92 million on two new electric ferries. The kicker is the shipbuilder they contracted, Damen, is facing bribery, forgery, and money laundering charges in the Netherlands. Dutch prosecutors even alleged the company violated sanctions concerning goods and technology that could strengthen the military and defense sector in Russia. We are sending millions of tax dollars overseas to a company tangled in massive legal scandals, all while they quietly pull the strings on our waterfront.
5. The Private Mega Spa by the Lake

This one is an absolute scandal. Over at Ontario Place, prime public waterfront land is being handed over to a private Austrian corporation to build a luxury mega spa. But that is not even the worst part. The government locked us into a 95 year lease and is using hundreds of millions of our tax dollars to build them a massive parking garage and prepare the site. We are talking upwards of $600 million of public money being sunk into a private luxury resort that most regular folks will not even be able to afford. They kept the details hidden for as long as possible, bulldozing public trees and our heritage, all so a private corporation can turn a massive profit on our dime.
Here is the exact breakdown of the capital costs:
FIFA World Cup:Â $380 million
SmartTrack Station:Â $97 million
Dundas Renaming:Â $12.7 million
Electric Ferries:Â $92 million
Ontario Place Mega Spa:Â $600 million
That comes out to $1,181,700,000Â in upfront spending. 118 Billion!
the recurring annual operating costs for the water taxi study, which tacks on anywhere from $645,000 to over $4.2 million every single year on top of that massive billion dollar total. It is a staggering amount of hard earned money.
This is concerning on a lot of levels, but the biggest issue at the top of the heap is that these astronomical figures are coming straight out of our pockets.
Half the people in Toronto are living paycheque to paycheque right now. The cost of living compared to what we bring home is so far out of reach that it is leaving us in an unlivable city, all because of the price of a basic roof over our heads. There is a fifteen year waiting list for affordable housing, yet we are the ones footing the bill for these mega projects. Those funds could be put directly to work creating affordable housing and giving us a real quality of life. It is about time our money actually started serving us.Â
It is time we start paying closer attention, Toronto. The gravy train is running off the rails, and it is our hard earned cash fueling the engine. Keep grinding out there and keep your eyes open.
