The Morning Coffee in a Broken House-Alberta Independence

4 min read

To the Alberta separatists demanding independence, you cannot file for a messy divorce from Canada and still expect to keep the military, the joint bank accounts, and the national pension plan.

It is Ants here. Let us get one thing absolutely crystal clear right out of the gate. Do not read this and think it is some desperate, teary-eyed plea to encourage you to stay. On the contrary, it is an unfortunate situation, but we are way past that point. You have already gone out and publicly told the entire neighborhood and the rest of the globe that you want out of this relationship and you no longer love us. Yet here we are, still awkwardly living in the exact same house.

Imagine making your morning coffee while the person you share a mortgage with constantly tells the neighbors how much they despise you. That is exactly where Canada and Alberta stand right now. We might be sleeping in separate rooms and just talking for the sake of the kids, but make no mistake. It is incredibly hard for the rest of Canada to let you comfortably stay in the house considering you told the entire world you want to break up. It is that old chestnut. At this point, we do not even really want you to stay if this is the game we are playing.

"When somebody leaves a good, healthy relationship with a good person for somebody else, that next person has absolutely zero respect for them. They know exactly how you operate, and they know they will just be next in line when you get bored."

This whole spectacle is an absolute embarrassment, and it looks bad on both of us. But let us face a hard truth about relationships. When somebody leaves a good, healthy relationship with a good person for somebody else, that next person has absolutely zero respect for them. They know exactly how you operate, and they know they will just be next in line when you get bored.

You are going to be tramping around the globe with your shirt pulled up so high that everybody can see you have absolutely nothing underneath. You will have no leverage, no federal backing, and very soon, no oil. You are setting yourself up to be a cheap roadside hitchhiker left as absolute carnage on the global highway.

But as Canadians, we are going to take the high road and give you a fair warning about what actually happens when you pack your bags and walk out the front door. Because there is no coming back from this. Once you leave, the locks get changed permanently.

The Illusion of "Kool-Aid Light"

The politicians selling you this breakup are feeding you pure fantasy. They are peddling a Kool-Aid Light that is cleverly packaged as a safe choice for Canadian sensibilities. It is the exact same toxic sugar they are drinking down south.

Let us look at the cold, hard divorce papers and the brutal reality of an exit strategy.

1. The Legal Wall: Treaties and Sovereign Land

First of all, you cannot even legally leave. You are completely ignoring the ironclad reality of treaty laws. You do not just get to draw a magic line around the province and claim it all for yourself.

The First Nations have a massive voice and constitutional rights in this. The treaties were signed with the Crown in right of Canada, not the breakaway republic of Alberta. You cannot just steal sovereign Indigenous land to fuel your little separatist experiment. It is a legal impossibility that will completely paralyze your fantasy from day one.

2. The Security Vacuum and the Dollar Dilemma

Then there is the security system. When you declare sovereignty, the Canadian Armed Forces pack up and leave. You have no military and no national defense.

You are suddenly a landlocked foreign country completely surrounded by Canada and the United States. Good luck negotiating borders or a military defense budget from scratch while you are trying to figure out what currency you are even going to use. You certainly do not get to keep printing the Canadian dollar and relying on the Bank of Canada to back your mortgages.

3. The Retirement Safety Net

What about the retirement fund? The Canada Pension Plan is a federal institution built on the contributions of the entire country over decades.

When you tear up your citizenship, that federal safety net vanishes entirely. Everyday working people who paid into the system their entire lives will be left holding an empty bag while an unproven provincial government tries to invent a pension plan out of thin air.

4. Landlocked Crude and American Leverage

Now let us talk about your oil. The entire argument for leaving is built on resource wealth. But as a sovereign nation, you are completely landlocked.

Every single pipeline going west, east, or south now crosses international borders. You no longer have the weight of the federal government negotiating trade deals. You are just one isolated territory.

And do you know who is waiting right across the border to capitalize on that weakness? Donald Trump and his administration will gladly step in to sponsor your oil and your resources. Just look at the facts. Look at how Donald Trump has treated his own working class time and time again, stepping on voters and bankrupting small operations to get ahead.

What chance in hell do you think you have with them? Without the protection and trade leverage of Canada, you will be bullied into selling out your energy sector to American interests for absolute pennies on the dollar. They will drain your resources dry, take the profits back to Washington, and unceremoniously lay the working class to rest at the roadside by the thousands.

When the Door Shuts, It Stays Shut

It is absolute madness. The leaders pushing this separation are treating everyday Albertans like pawns in a massive ego trip. They are hiding the reality of the economic collapse waiting right on the other side of the door.

If you see the light, maybe we can come to some agreement where we end up living under the same roof happy again. But if you are determined to drink that Kool-Aid Light and march straight off the cliff, remember this warning:

When you walk out that door, it locks behind you.

Mind the Kool-Aid, Alberta.
